Gemini App Bug on Android Is Stripping Features You Just Got — Here’s What’s Missing and What to Do

-

A Gemini app bug on Android appeared on April 18, 2026, and it did not wait for permission. Multiple recent features disappeared overnight. Users running Google app version 17.14 on stable and beta channels are both affected. The bug rolls back interface changes and removes tools that arrived only weeks ago. Google has not issued a public statement yet, but a server-side fix is expected. You do not need to uninstall anything. You do need to know which features are gone and how to keep working.

What the Gemini App Bug on Android Is Breaking

The damage is not cosmetic. Core workflow features are missing.

NotebookLM Notebook Upload Is Gone

The plus menu in the prompt box no longer lets you upload NotebookLM notebooks. The design also reverted from a list layout back to side-by-side pills.

This matters because Google launched Notebooks in Gemini on April 8, 2026. Notebooks are described as “personal knowledge bases shared across Google products, starting in Gemini.” They let you organize chats and files and sync bidirectionally with NotebookLM, so sources added in either app appear in both.

The integration was announced for Google AI Ultra, Pro, and Plus subscribers on the web starting April 8, 2026, with mobile access set to follow in the coming weeks. The bug hit mobile right as that rollout was gaining momentum.

Temporary Chat and Memory Import Have Disappeared

The Temporary Chat button, designed for private conversations, has vanished from the top-right corner. The “Import memory to Gemini” option is also missing from the profile menu, cutting off access to personal context users had already set up.

If you rely on Gemini for research, study, or daily task management, those two removals hit your workflow directly. Temporary Chat lets you start a session that leaves no history. Import memory lets you bring context from other AI apps into Gemini. Both require deliberate steps to set up, so losing them mid-use is disruptive.

Other Features the Bug Is Affecting

Beyond the headline losses, several other behaviors have changed.

Voice-to-text has regressed. It now automatically sends messages during pauses instead of waiting for a manual send. Users can only upload one image at a time, and the option to delete a chat within an ongoing conversation is no longer available.

If you dictate prompts or use multi-image uploads for comparison tasks, these regressions directly affect your output speed.

The UI Changes You Will See Immediately

The visual rollback confirms this is a broad regression, not a feature toggle.

The black background has reverted to gray. The suggested action pills have lost their outlines. Outside the Gemini app, the Android overlay has gone back to the previous design without full access to the Tools menu, and the fullscreen glow is also gone.

These visual changes make the app feel older. They also signal the depth of the rollback. This is not a single missing toggle.

Who Gets Hit by the Gemini App Bug on Android

The bug is happening to Android users on both the stable and beta channels with Google app 17.14.

Are you on a beta program? You are not protected from this one. Both channels are running the same broken version. The bug is server-side, which means Google pushed a configuration change that affected everyone on that app version simultaneously.

This also explains why there is no fix you can apply yourself. Rolling back the app version is unlikely to help since the issue lives outside the APK.

Why This Bug Hits Harder Than a Standard Crash

A crash is annoying. A silent feature removal is harder to diagnose.

Most users will not immediately understand why features they used yesterday are gone today. They might assume they disabled a setting or lost access tied to a subscription. The NotebookLM sync was positioned by Google as a step toward a “persistent context layer,” pulling Gemini closer to how ChatGPT Projects and Claude Projects work. Losing that access after just days of availability creates a real interruption for people who started building workflows around it.

That positioning matters. Google framed Notebooks as a foundational feature, not a beta experiment. Rolling it back, even briefly, signals a gap between server-side control and user-facing stability.

If you were already using Gemini Personal Intelligence features on Android, this bug adds to that disruption. Our earlier coverage of Google’s Personal Intelligence AI explains why these contextual features have become central to how many users work with Gemini daily.

The Gemini App Bug on Android: How to Keep Working Right Now

You have a working option available immediately. Follow these steps.

  1. Open your mobile browser and go to gemini.google.com.
  2. Sign in with your Google account if prompted.
  3. Tap the three-dot menu or the share icon in your browser and select “Add to Home Screen.”
  4. This creates a Progressive Web App (PWA) shortcut that behaves close to a native app.
  5. Gemini.google.com is not affected by this bug and provides a full mobile and Progressive Web App experience with access to the missing features.

This workaround gives you back NotebookLM upload access, Temporary Chat, and the Import memory option while Google deploys a server-side fix.

Can you use the PWA long-term? Yes. Several Gemini power users already prefer the web version for its feature parity with desktop. The gap between the native Android app and the web interface has shrunk considerably over the past year.

What to Expect From Google’s Fix

Google has not posted a public timeline. The fact that this is a server-side issue works in your favor. Server-side fixes do not require you to download a new app update. Google can push a configuration change that restores the missing features without any action on your part.

Watch for feature restoration appearing silently. When the fix rolls out, NotebookLM upload, Temporary Chat, the Import memory option, and the correct UI design should return without a prompt.

Check your Gemini app version in your device settings. If a new version of the Google app appears in the Play Store before the server fix arrives, update it. A new build may carry the corrected configuration.
