Asus ROG Phone 7 Ultimate review: A gaming beast with a hidden trick

-

Display, battery life and charging

The ROG Phone 7 Ultimate has one of the best displays on any smartphone. It’s a 6.78-inch AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2448 pixels and an aspect ratio of 20.4:9. It supports up to 1 billion colors, HDR10+, adaptive refresh rate up to 165Hz and touch sampling rate up to 720Hz. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner and an always-on display feature.

The display is bright, sharp and vibrant, with excellent contrast and viewing angles. It can also adjust its refresh rate dynamically depending on the content you’re watching or playing, ranging from 30Hz to 165Hz. This helps save battery life and improve smoothness. You can also manually choose between different refresh rate modes in the settings.

Speaking of battery life, the ROG Phone 7 Ultimate has a massive 6000mAh battery that can easily last for two days of moderate use or one day of heavy gaming. In our battery tests, it scored an endurance rating of 115 hours on our web browsing test, 24 hours on our video playback test and 11 hours on our gaming test.

The phone also supports fast wired charging with its bundled 65W charger. It can charge from zero to 100% in about 42 minutes, which is impressive for such a large battery. It also supports reverse wired charging at 10W, which means you can use it to charge other devices via a USB-C cable.

The phone does not support wireless charging, however, which is a bit disappointing for a flagship device in 2023. Asus says this is because wireless charging would interfere with the phone’s cooling system and performance. If you don’t mind the trade-off, you can still use a third-party wireless charger with the phone, but it won’t be as fast or efficient as wired charging.
