YouTube has given up on its initiative to restrict 4K video to paid subscribers

YouTube has “switched off” the test that restricted 4K videos to Premium subscribers alone. According to the platform’s Twitter announcement, all users will have unrestricted access to 4K content without the need for premium memberships.

Last month, it was reported that certain YouTube app users were seeing “Premium” next to the 2160p choice. Although it was reported by a small number of customers, this may have been harmless A/B testing on the part of the company.

We don’t know how the experiment went, but it’s for the best that YouTube decided to stop it. YouTube is still interested in hearing user input on the functionality, as evidenced by a tweet posted earlier this month in Japanese.
